Carroll’s Associate degree in Registered Nursing program prepares students, including current LPNs, to receive the practical knowledge and hands-on training to enter one of the most in-demand fields in health care as RNs.

The Carroll Community College Associate Degree in Nursing Program is pursuing accreditation from the National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA), located at 2600 Virginia Avenue, NW, 8th Floor, Washington, DC 20037; phone 202-909-2487. Our selective admission program combines classroom learning, hands-on experience with patient care simulators, and clinical rotations at regional hospitals, mainly in Carroll, Frederick and Baltimore Counties and Baltimore City.

Coursework qualifies students to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN).

Already a licensed practical nurse (LPN), Paramedic (NRP) or Military Medic?

Carroll offers a track for LPNs, NRPs and Medics who hold appropriate credentials. Admission to this program is very competitive. Be sure to read the admission requirements.

Educational Options:

Practical Nursing Certificate:

Students who successfully complete the first year of the Registered Nursing Program at Carroll Community College can go on to obtain a Practical Nursing Certificate. Interested students would take a practical nursing summer course to be eligible to take the National Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN), taken by those seeking to become licensed as a practical nurse (LPN) or vocational nurse (LVN).     Rebecca Barker

    Associate Professor - Nursing

    Rebecca Barker graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2013 from University of Maryland and her Master of Science in Nursing―Family Nurse Practitioner program from Simmons College in 2017. She had experience as a bedside nurse at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma as well as skilled rehabilitation before obtaining her state licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. She believes in the value of an excellent education to train the next generation of quality nurses and is excited to be a part of the Carroll team. ​

    Shelly Fourhman

    Associate Professor - Nursing

    Shelly Fourhman teaches in the first and second terms of the Nursing program. She has been a member of the Nursing faculty at Carroll since 2015. She plays an integral role in simulation and student learning for the Nursing program.  She is the course coordinator for Medication Administration and BIO-220 Nutrition class. 

    Professor Fourhman is in the process of attaining a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and she earned her Master’s degree in Nursing at the University of Phoenix. Prior to her career at Carroll, she taught as an instructor for pediatric and community nursing clinicals. Her background consists of 24 years of experience as a nurse, with a specialty in pediatric nursing, focusing on the management of burn, diabetes and transplant pediatric patients. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau, a national honor society.

    Jennifer Fritzges

    Chair/Professor - Allied Health

    Dr. Jennifer Fritzges has been part of the nursing faculty since September 2009. Her nursing background is in Surgical/Trauma Intensive Care, Pediatrics, and Lactation. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing degree at Benedictine University, and Doctor of Nursing Practice degree at Duquesne University. Dr. Fritzges is the Chair of the Allied Health Division and the Program Director for the Nursing Program at Carroll Community College. She also works as a nurse educator consultant, helping programs implement concept-based teaching programs. Dr. Fritzges loves working with students to make the classroom environment engaging and increasing participation and active learning. In her spare time, Dr. Fritzges loves spending time with her family and her many pets.

    Cheryl Geary

    Assistant Professor - Nursing

    Cheryl has been a full-time faculty member at Carroll Community College since January 2022 and is currently teaching students in the first year of the Nursing program. Cheryl started her career as an ADN nurse. She received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Stevenson University in 2018 and returned to Stevenson University where she graduated in 2021 with a Master of Science in Nursing with a Concentration in Education. She has previously worked as a floor nurse, and over the past years has been an operating room nurse. Cheryl is an active member of the local chapter of AORN (Association of periOperative Registered Nurses) and continues to practice in OR nursing part-time. Cheryl has a strong desire to teach and mentor nursing students and help them to appreciate the desire for life-long learning.

    Britney Harden

    Assistant Professor - Nursing

    Prof. Harden teaches students in the third and fourth term. She is a proud alumni of Carroll Community College’s nursing program and has gone on to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing Education from Stevenson University. She is Medical Surgical Nursing board certified, and her clinical experience is in acute care. She continues to practice locally at the bedside across disparate units and is looking forward to working alongside the remarkable future nurses that will graduate from Carroll Community College’s nursing program.

    Tammy Keller

    Associate Professor - Nursing

    Tammy has been a full-time faculty member at Carroll Community College since August 2018 and is currently teaching students in the first year of the Nursing program. She graduated from Towson University in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and then attended Stevenson University where she graduated in 2013 with a Master of Science in Nursing with a Concentration in Education. She worked at a teaching hospital as a pediatric nurse for ten years prior to becoming a nurse educator. Tammy is excited to teach the next generation of nurses in the community where she has grown up, and she knows first-hand the hard work and dedication the students show as she has two sisters who graduated from our program. Tammy also helps mentor students taking additional classes at partner schools working towards a Bachelor degree while in the Nursing program at Carroll.

    Donna Rohrbaugh

    Allied Health Skills Laboratory Coordinator

    Donna Rohrbaugh is the Allied Health and Nursing Lab Coordinator. She graduated from York College of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science degree with a nursing focus. She worked Med/Surg and telemetry for many years at a local hospital. She also worked for a nursing agency in a variety of areas. Donna began teaching clinicals at Carroll as adjunct faculty in Fall of 2007, while also assisting in the simulation lab as needed. In September 2020, she accepted the role of full-time lab coordinator. She has been working to improve the realism of the simulation scenarios.

    Tammy Schwaab

    Simulation Director/Professor - Nursing

    Tammy Schwaab is a Professor of Nursing and the Simulation Specialist in Carroll’s Nursing Program. She has been with the College since August 2010. She graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1996 and a Master of Science in Nursing Education from Stevenson University in 2014. Her clinical expertise is in Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care & Hospital-Based education. She is certified in healthcare simulation education (CHSE) and enjoys using clinical simulation to develop student’s reasoning abilities, communication and teamwork skills, leading to enhanced safety and quality care for patients cared for by Carroll’s nursing graduates. She is currently completing her doctoral studies on the use of clinical simulation to improve the self-confidence and clinical competence of newly graduated registered nurses when caring for deteriorating patients.

    Amy Yanky

    Assistant Professor - Nursing

    Amy Yanky joined the Carroll Community College in Spring of 2023 and transitioned to full time faculty in the Fall of 2023 after discovering a passion for helping students bridge the gap, bringing theory to bedside. Amy graduated with her ADN in 2018. She went on to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Western Governors University in 2020 and her MSN in Nursing Education in 2023. Amy’s nursing focus has been primarily emergency room focused, earning her emergency nursing and trauma certifications.

    Lourdes Celius

    Assistant Professor - Nursing

    Dr. Lourdes Celius is the psychiatric mental health nursing full-time faculty at Carroll Community College. She earned her Master’s (entry into nursing) degree at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and went on to complete her Doctor of Nursing practice degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner with a concentration in primary care in 2022. She pursued a Psychiatric Mental Health post-master’s certificate in 2023. Dr. Celius has worked as an inpatient psychiatric staff nurse for several years at a psychiatric hospital in Towson, MD. In addition to instruction, she also works as a primary care Nurse Practitioner in an outpatient clinic in Hunt Valley. Dr. Celius is a proud first-generation student. She enjoys discussions with students about therapeutic strategies to assist all patients with mindful consideration of how inpatient hospitalizations or chronic disease management can influence a person’s mental health
