Registered Behavior Technician FAQ

Why Should You Become an RBT?

According to the BACB, the benefits of RBT training include:

  • It shows that you have met certain requirements that are critical in delivering behavior analysis services.
  • It provides increased consumer protection since you must meet certain eligibility (e.g., pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check, meet certain knowledge requirements) and maintenance (e.g., receive ongoing supervision, adhere to an ethics code) requirements to obtain and maintain certification.
  • It makes it easier for employers, funders, consumers, etc. to verify that you have certain knowledge, skills, and abilities; have appropriate oversight; and are not under disciplinary sanctions.
  • It is a widely recognized and respected credential since it is offered by the BACB, the nation’s first organization to certify behavior analysis professionals.

Where do Registered Behavior Technicians work?

RBTs may work in a wide variety of settings including, but not limited to, home, community, school or clinic settings.

What’s the starting wage range for a certified RBT?

As seen most often on Indeed.com, the starting wage range for a Registered Behavior Technician is typically $20-$30/hr.

Is the program remote or in-person?

The RBT training is instructor-led remote learning.

Can I take an RBT course if I’m not proficient in English?

Bilingual RBTs are in high demand. Students who wish to become an RBT and have a first language other than English can learn the specialized English needed to successfully complete the RBT training by taking English for RBT Training. We offer this RBT course free to qualified students at the High Intermediate or Advanced levels of ESOL. The English for RBT Training course is offered concurrently with the RBT training program.

This program not only gave me new knowledge, strategies and resources, but it also supplied me with a great deal of confidence while discussing and understanding the role of an RBT. I secured a job as a Behavioral Technician in September 2023, shortly after I finished the training program. In January 2024, I passed the RBT exam, and I am now a Registered Behavioral Technician… all in less than a year!
