MILLER Case Study: Focus First Academic Coaching LLC
Starting a business is a journey filled with challenges, especially when it involves catering to students with unique learning needs. Diana Ricker, the founder of Focus First Academic Coaching LLC, faced these challenges head-on with the help of Miller: Resources for Entrepreneurs.
From Passion to Profession
Holding a Maryland Teaching Certificate and specialized training in Orton-Gillingham multisensory reading and writing instruction, Diana has spent over two decades teaching in both public and private schools. However, it was her firsthand experience as a mother of a neurodivergent child that truly inspired her to establish Focus First Academic Coaching.
“The inspiration for starting Focus First Academic Coaching came from my passion for education and my desire to support students who face unique learning challenges,” Diana explained. Her dedication to helping students with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning difficulties fueled her drive to create a space where these students could receive the support they need to overcome academic hurdles and build confidence.
“These students learn differently and once you ‘crack the code’ to figure out how to reach each of them, the sky’s the limit,” Diana said. “I just love seeing them reach their personal and academic goals.”
Miller Makes a Difference
Launching Focus First Academic Coaching was no easy task. Diana faced multiple challenges, from investing in the right technology to navigating the complexities of business management. “I had to read and understand the legality of contracts and setting up safe spaces for the students to learn both in person and online,” she shared. “Managing the administrative tasks of setting up a business while simultaneously developing and refining coaching programs required a lot of my personal time and commitment after working all day.”
This is where Miller: Resources for Entrepreneurs came into the picture, providing much-needed guidance and support. After being introduced to them through a colleague’s recommendation, Diana applied for a scholarship through Miller. She earned the scholarship and completed two of their courses: “How to Start a Website” and “Preparation for Pathways to Entrepreneurship,” as well as attended their “Ready, Set, Go!” conference.
Working closely with her mentor, Director of Miller Tom Mazerski, Diana received expert advice on everything from business structure to marketing strategies. “Tom provided valuable insights into market positioning and helped me craft a compelling brand narrative, making it easier to build credibility and attract clients,” Diana said. Tom’s expertise also extended to strategic planning and operational efficiency, ensuring that Focus First Academic Coaching remains sustainable and growth oriented. “He kept pushing me to think bigger and to plan for the next 5 to 10 years.”
One of the most significant contributions from Miller was the support Diana received for the 2024 Carroll County Biz Challenge, which showcases local entrepreneurs and gives them the opportunity to pitch their new business ideas. Diana made it to the Top 5 out of 32 applicants, qualifying her to pitch Focus First Academic Coaching on stage at the event. “Tom encouraged me to enter the Carroll County Biz Challenge. I have him to thank for the expert coaching he provided during the contest.”
Miller’s guidance in refining my business model and setting realistic goals has been crucial in maintaining focus and direction.
Looking Ahead with Miller
Diana’s journey with Miller doesn’t end here. As Focus First Academic Coaching continues to grow, she plans to consult with Tom and the Miller team for scaling operations, exploring new e-commerce marketing opportunities, and adapting to changes in the educational landscape. “Tom’s expertise will be crucial in continuing to make the business grow as I plan to hire more tutors to teach, making a difference in our community,” Diana says.
Diana’s experience with Miller has been nothing short of transformative, and she encourages other entrepreneurs to take advantage of their services. “They really helped me see myself as not only an educator, but as an entrepreneur with limitless potential,” Diana says. “Engaging with Tom and the Miller Foundation early on can significantly ease the process of setting up and growing a business. It helped me to build a solid foundation and achieve my goals.”
Indeed, Diana’s story is an inspiration to all aspiring entrepreneurs, and a shining example of how Miller: Resources for Entrepreneurs can make a difference in the success of a new business.
