JOB SUMMARY

The part time Librarian works with library faculty and staff to support the mission of Carroll Community College’s library by providing reference and information services to students, College employees, and community members. The part time Librarian also collaborates with other Librarians and Subject Faculty to teach information literacy to students in person and online. This position reports to the Director of Library.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide reference services to students, employees, and community members in person, via chat, over the phone, and via email. Instruct, assist, troubleshoot technological problems
  • Provide library instruction to students via classroom, remotely, or asynchronously as needed
  • Provides instruction, assistance, and troubleshooting in the use of computers, printers, and other technology in public service areas as needed
  • Participate in departmental meetings and planning sessions including faculty meetings and Librarian meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Current educational achievement in one of the following:
    • ALA accredited MLS/MILS/MLIS/MIS (various designations for a master’s in Library and Information Science) OR
    • Equivalent school media specialist certification OR
    • Graduate student in an ALA accredited MLS/MILS/MLIS/MIS (various designations for a master’s in Library and Information Science) program who has six or fewer credits left and must obtain degree within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience using MS Office Suite, online catalogs/databases, web searching and web-based resources
  • Awareness of technological developments in the field
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing and/or accounting purposes
  • Use small office equipment including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems
  • Must be positive, cooperative, and supportive
  • Occasional night and Saturday shifts required, and the successful candidate must be able to work 8:00a. – 4:00p. on Fridays

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year of library experience overall (in academic, public, or school libraries) at the professional level
  • One year of academic library experience at the professional level
  • Teaching experience in an academic, public, or school library

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position involves mainly sedentary work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Hear/talk/communicate – Must be able to exchange information and communicate
  • Visual Acuity – Ability to perceive or detect surroundings
  • Mental Acuity – Able to focus, concentrate, understand, and convey subject matter
  • Repetitive motion (i.e., keyboarding)
  • Stand/sit/walk/able to move or traverse from one area to another

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

College campus, direct contact with diverse students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office, meeting, and training rooms. Use of safe workplace practices with office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing with some highly technical applications and new technology systems; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations; observance of college vehicle policies and laws when/if driving a college vehicle and observance of all college policies.  Work hours may vary as assigned by supervisor (generally 15-20 hours per week).  Occasional night and Saturday shifts required, and the successful candidate must be able to work 8:00a. – 4:00p. on Fridays.
