JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting in the College Art Studios and Galleries including, but not limited to; ordering and stocking classroom and gallery materials, loading/unloading kilns, maintaining a weekly kiln firing schedule, pugging and reclaiming clay, maintaining studio equipment as necessary, maintaining organized studio and workspaces, packing and crating artwork for shipment/storage, assisting with installations/de-installations of artwork in the galleries, maintaining safe storage of artwork, working with the curator to lay out exhibitions, communicating with artists, and other related duties as assigned. The position reports to the Department Chair.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist with the installation and de-installation of exhibitions in gallery spaces
  • Kiln operation including basic maintenance, loading/unloading, firing
  • Reclaiming and pugging clay
  • Maintain a supply list and order supplies as needed for studios and galleries
  • Pack, crate and prepare artwork for shipment and/or storage
  • Maintain safe storage solutions for all artwork on premises
  • Maintenance and upkeep of galleries and art studios
  • Build plinths, shelving, cleats etc. as needed
  • Assist with activities at the gallery, including private viewings and opening receptions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • HS Degree and one-year related experience (college courses are acceptable experience)
  • Ability to safely use basic tools (drill, hammer, heat gun, etc.) as well as ladders frequently
  • Occasional use of electric saws, lighting equipment, painting lifts etc.
  • Basic understanding of the structural needs of gallery walls and ceilings
  • Attention to detail related to inspecting hanging artwork, tools, hanging mechanisms etc.
  • Ability to take direction and work alone with checkpoints from curator/department chair
  • Working knowledge of kilns, pottery wheels, pug mills, and extruders

Preferred:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts or related field

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The work involves physical, on-the-move activity.  Artworks, clay, and equipment need to be handled and moved around the galleries and studios, often requiring ladder usage, bending, and/or heavy lifting.   Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Hear/talk/communicate – Must be able to exchange information and communicate
  • Visual Acuity – Ability to perceive or detect surroundings
  • Mental acuity – Able to focus, concentrate, understand, and convey subject matter
  • Repetitive motion (i.e., use of tools)
  • Stand/sit/walk – Able to move or traverse from one area to another

WORK ENVIRONMENT:     

College campus, direct contact with diverse students, staff, faculty and the general public in classrooms, common areas, offices, and campus environments. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as art galleries and studios, office, meeting, and training rooms; use of safe workplace practices with tools, ladders or other equipment needed to install/de-install art exhibitions and operate relevant equipment; use of office equipment; computers for data entry and word processing with some highly technical applications and new technology systems; avoidance of trips and falls; observance of fire and building safety regulations and College policies.  Ability to be flexible to meet shifting deadlines, different personality types with exhibiting artists and instructors, and unique display mechanisms for non-traditional artwork.  Estimated hours for this position are 5-20 hours per week.
