Celebrating Women’s Leadership in Education: A Historic Moment for Carroll County Institutions During Women’s History Month

Westminster, MD─ As we step into Women’s History Month this March, the Carroll County community celebrates a historic and inspiring milestone in the education sector. For the first time, all three of the county’s highest-ranking educational leaders are women: the superintendent of public schools and the presidents of the county’s higher education institutions (the community college and four-year college). This powerful representation highlights the incredible strides made by women in education and underscores the importance of leadership within our local institutions.

Dr. Cynthia McCabe is the first female Superintendent in the 160-year history of Carroll County Public Schools. Throughout her career with the school system, she has held the positions of Assistant Principal, Principal, Elementary Supervisor, Director of Elementary Schools, and Chief of Schools before becoming Superintendent in 2022. Throughout her tenure as Superintendent, she has placed a strong emphasis on academic achievement and success for all students.

She has demonstrated unprecedented leadership in navigating the school system through the complexities of Maryland’s Blueprint for Education. As Superintendent, she has implemented innovative programs and is a strong believer in the importance of parent and community involvement and a quality education that prepares students for a rapidly changing world.

“We are proud to witness such a momentous occasion in our community. This year, as we honor Women’s History Month, we celebrate the achievements of these remarkable leaders who have paved the way for future generations of women in education,” said Dr. Kristie Crumley, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Carroll Community College. “Their leadership reflects the power of women in shaping the course of education and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.”

Under the guidance of Dr. Rose Mince, the fourth president of Carroll Community College, the college has solicited wide involvement to develop the framework for a new strategic plan that focuses on opportunities to learn, experience, and earn for students, the internal college community, and external partners, businesses, and agencies.

Mince has placed increased emphasis on professional development and instituted collegewide Discovery Days. She has played an important role in supporting fundraising initiatives through the College Foundation to enhance programs and services, including the installment of a turf field to expand athletics.

Her impressive background and visionary leadership are propelling Carroll Community College forward in its mission to serve its students and community. Mince’s commitment to workforce development and accessibility for all students has launched new programming and pathways to success for individuals of all backgrounds. She is a strong advocate for student transfer and connecting students with experiences that will advance their education and careers.

Dr. Julia Jasken is the 10th president of McDaniel College and the second woman president in the college’s over 150-year history. She is a champion of both the liberal arts and McDaniel’s student-centered mission. As president, she launched the college’s five-year strategic plan to further position McDaniel as an innovative liberal arts college focused on student achievement and professional success.

Over the past five years, Jasken has led the college through the development of new academic majors and programs. She has also been focused on strengthening community partnerships, including the introduction of the Carroll County Scholars, a free program providing college search support and guidance that is open to Carroll County high school students. “The leadership of these women serves as an example of the vital role women play in shaping our educational systems and communities. Their stories are a testament to the strength, resilience, and vision of women throughout history, inspiring the next generation to dream big and reach for the stars,” said David Bollinger, Carroll Community College board member.

This Women’s History Month, we invite all members of our community to celebrate the achievements of these incredible women and recognize the many women leaders who continue to break barriers and create positive change in education.
