Volleyball Game Carroll Community College

Miriam Zuazo, a Plantation, Florida native, never imagined she’d find herself playing volleyball in Maryland. But when the time came to choose a college, she took a leap of faith that led her to Carroll Community College, where she’s now thriving both on and off the court.

Finding the Right Fit

Miriam had been considering various schools across the country, eager to pursue both her passion for volleyball and her major in Communications. “I was looking at many different schools and had offers from a few other schools,” Miriam shared, “but after visiting them, I did not see myself going there or feeling comfortable.” Like many college-bound students, she sought a school where she felt at ease—a place that felt like home.

Miriam’s journey to Carroll Community College started with a recruiting website, where she first connected with Carroll volleyball coach Teri Leatherwood. “We spoke on the phone a few times,” Leatherwood recalled, “and I told her about all the wonderful things Carroll has to offer, such as the Honors programs, special interest clubs, events like trips to NYC or professional sports games, and the Academic Center.”

During her subsequent visit to Carroll’s campus, Miriam met with Leatherwood and even got a chance to speak to a member of the College’s inaugural volleyball team, which helped her see herself as part of the program.

“I chose Carroll because it wouldn’t be as intense as a D2 or D3 school, and it would be a perfect chance to see if I want to continue playing volleyball after,” Miriam said.

Making the Move

Moving from Florida to Maryland was a significant change for Miriam. She was concerned about finding housing in a new state, but with her parents’ help, they secured a place just in time for her to begin her new adventure. “My parents, who I’m incredibly grateful for, did not give up on trying to find me a place to live. We eventually found a place just a couple of days before I had to come up here.”

Miriam appreciates the close-knit nature of Carroll’s Athletics program. “Since it’s a small school, it’s easy for all of the teams to come together and support each other,” she said. “I’m excited to go watch the girls/guys soccer teams play too!”

Miriam’s presence from out of state also adds a new dynamic to the team. “Bringing players from out of state brings a different experience for our team because they get the opportunity to meet people not from Carroll County while still attending their local community college,” Leatherwood explained.

“Miriam is doing very well on the volleyball team,” Leatherwood added. “She is an integral part of our offense, and we are very hopeful she will return next year!”

Courting Her Future

Miriam looks forward to exploring her future college options after Carroll. “I can decide if I want to keep playing volleyball and see what schools I can transfer to play at,” Miriam said, “or I will go to my dream school to continue studying Communications at Florida State University.” Both of Miriam’s parents graduated from FSU, and her brother and other family members are currently attending there as well.

Regardless of where Miriam’s path takes her next, she’s confident about the journey ahead. “I can’t wait to see where my path takes me, and I know I will be happy with either one of my choices.”

By stepping out of her comfort zone to move 1,000 miles away from her hometown, Carroll Community College is able to offer Miriam a steppingstone to success beyond its courts and classrooms. Carroll strives to recruit more student-athletes like her, bringing exceptional talent, adventurous ambition, and a positive spirit not only to their teams, but to the campus community overall.
