About the SGO

The Student Government Organization (SGO), governed by the ten elected members of the SGO Board, anchors the organization of student activities. The SGO's provides maximum opportunity for participation in all campus activities, establishes and maintains student rights and academic freedom, serves as the voice of the student body about campus life and a liaison to the Administration, and promotes student cultural, social and physical welfare.



Elections for the SGO Board's new student representatives occur in the fall. Applications for the term are available in A118 or online, beginning in the first week of fall semester classes. The application must be completed and submitted by the specified deadline. All applicants are then interviewed by the board during a regular board meeting.Campaigns run for two weeks, followed by elections on Blackboard in the first week of October. All current credit students are eligible to vote.

Five returning student representatives are elected in the spring. Students wishing to run for an elected position need to complete an SGO Application which is also available in the SGO office or on the SGO Blackboard site.

Returning student representatives are the sole members of the SGO board throughout the summer and into the fall semester until new student elections are held. These students have the power to conduct SGO business during this time - just as the full board does when all representatives have been elected.

  • Download or pick up the SGO application in the Student Life Office (A118).
  • Read and complete application. Return it to A118 by 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept.19.
  • Attend the interview meeting, for all eligible candidates, on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room.
  • Participate in the SGO Candidates Forum, sponsored by The Quill, on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 3:30 p.m. in the Board Room.


SGO Board Member Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the SGO Board include regulating and budgeting student activities fees with the Student Activities Finance Board, representing the views of students to other college constituents, and appointing students to SGO and college committees, which provides opportunities for student involvement in the governance process at the college.

Meetings are held weekly during the fall and spring semesters and are open to the college community. During the Fall and Spring terms, the SGO Board meetings are held Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. in room A118. 

The SGO also sponsors an annual leadership awards banquet each May, where scholarships are awarded based on students’ involvement in leadership and campus activities.
