Service-Learning - Volunteer Opportunities

The Student Life Office offers a variety of service-learning opportunities for students throughout the year. The length of service varies for each site and event.

Spring 2015 Opportunities

 

SERRV International
Friday, Feb. 20
8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m

SERRV International is a nonprofit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing support to artisans and farmers worldwide. This service opportunity allows you to learn about Fair Trade and package handmade items from all over the world. 
There is a $5 refundable deposit for this service opportunity. Sign up online.

 

iServe Trip to the Cold Weather Shelter
Tuesday, Feb. 24
6 - 8 p.m.

The Cold Weather Shelter is located in Westminster and provides lodging for men and women from November through March. Volunteers are expected to contribute a food item towards a meal to serve to the shelter clients that night. There is a $5 refundable deposit for this service opportunity. Sign up online.

 

iServe Trip to the Boys and Girls Club
Tuesday, March 17
3:30 - 6:30 p.m.

The Boys and Girls Club provides healthy, supervised after-school programs and activities for children in Westminster.  On this day, we will plan a St. Patrick’s Day party for them that they will never forget! Sign up online.

Alternative Spring Break to West Virginia
Sunday, March 29 - Saturday, April 4

This trip is open to 12 students. The application is due to the Student Life Office (A118) by Friday, Feb. 20. 

 

Westminster Spring Clean Up
Saturday,  April 11
9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

This clean-up project that takes place in and around Main Street in Westminster, in conjunction with volunteers from McDaniel College. Volunteers paint, pick-up trash, plant, mulch, weed, and perform general maintenance in local parks and recreational areas. We coordinate with city officials and other local organizations who supply the projects and oversee the work.

A light breakfast and lunch are provided. Participants receive a t-shirt to wear as they work, to identify them as clean-up volunteers. Sign up online.

 

iServe Trip to My Sister's Place
Friday, April 17
9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

My Sister's Place is a comprehensive resource center, a single location, where women can find resources for health, returning to work and financial problems. Help us serve a meal at this center. Sign up online.
