Service-Learning - Volunteer Opportunities

The Student Life Office offers a variety of service-learning opportunities for students throughout the year. The length of service varies for each site and event. 

To sign up for these events, visits the Student Life Office (A118). If you have trouble finding a volunteer opportunity that's right for you, contact the Coordinator of Experiential Learning and Student Organizations to explore additional opportunities.

 

Spring 2014 Opportunities

 

SERRV International
Friday, Feb. 21
8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

SERRV International is a nonprofit organization with a mission to eradicate poverty wherever it resides by providing support to artisans and farmers worldwide.This service opportunity allows you to learn about Fair Trade and package handmade items from all over the world. *There is a $5 refundable deposit for this service opportunity if you are riding in a college vehicle.

 

Carroll Lutheran Village
Friday, March 21
1:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Carroll Lutheran Village is a continuing care community in Westminster, MD for older retired adults. *There is a $5 refundable deposit for this service opportunity if you are riding in a college vehicle.

 

Cold Weather Shelter
Tuesday, March 25
6 - 8:30 p.m.

The Cold Weather Shelter is located in Westminster, MD and provides lodging for men and women from November through March. Donate a food item towards the meal you'll help serve that evening. There is a $5 refundable deposit for this service opportunity if you are riding in a college vehicle. 

 

New Life for Girls
Monday, March 31 
noon - 4 p.m.

New Life for Girls was founded with the belief that women who are addicted, physically and emotionally abused, incarcerated, or lost and broken should be given a second chance to turn their lives around and become whole members of society. Help clean-up the center’s garden and plant new items that can be maintained by the residents. Prior gardening experience is not necessary. *There is a $5 refundable deposit for this service opportunity if you are riding in a college vehicle.

 

Westminster Spring Clean Up
Saturday, April 5
9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Ready to help your community with a little spring cleaning? Carroll is partnering with McDaniel College students for a day of painting, cleaning, mulching, planting, and other general service on local recreational facilities throughout Westminster.  We’ll also supply you with a free t-shirt to wear and free lunch!The last day to sign up is Thursday, March 20. *There is a $5 refundable deposit for this service opportunity.

 

My Sister’s Place
Friday, April 11
9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

My Sister’s Place is a comprehensive resource center, a single location where women can find resources to get help with health, returning to work and financial problems.Help us plan, prepare and serve a meal at this center with the food that you and others donate for the night's meal. *There is a $5 refundable deposit for this service opportunity if you are riding in a college vehicle.

 

Alternative Spring Break
Sunday - Saturday, April 13 – 19 
Lewisburg, WV

Ever hung drywall or shingled a rood? Now’s your chance! We’ll travel to Lewisburg, WV for the week to partner with Habitat for Humanity, working on affordable housing that benefits families living in poverty. Come help us rebuild lives this spring break! 

Applications are available in the Student Life Office (A118) and are due by Friday, March 7 at 4 p.m.  The cost of this trip is $250, which includes food, lodging and travel.
