A

A.A. Degree
Associate of Arts (A.A.) means a degree which recognizes a mastery in the liberal arts (social sciences, humanities, and similar subjects) and in the fine arts (music, art, etc.). The program is intended for transfer to an equivalent Bachelor of Arts degree program at 4-year institutions.
A.S. Degree
Associate of Science (A.S.) means a degree which recognizes a mastery in science or technology (natural sciences, nursing) with a heavy emphasis on undergraduate mathematics or science. The program is intended for transfer to a Bachelor of Science degree program at 4-year institutions.
A.A.S. Degree
Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) means a degree which recognizes a mastery of technical occupational skills (computer technology, law enforcement, etc.). The program is intended for those seeking immediate employment opportunities. However, the program does not preclude a student from transferring to a technical baccalaureate degree program such as a bachelor's degree in technology or a bachelor's degree in technical or professional studies, or from transferring non-technical courses to a 4-year institution.
A.A.T. Degree
Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) means a degree which recognizes a mastery in teacher education which: a) meets the lower level degree academic content, outcomes, and requirements for teacher education, similar to the first two years of a baccalaureate program in teacher education; b) requires a passing score on Praxis I; c) requires a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale; and d) if achieved, transfers in total without further review by Maryland public and independent 4-year institutions.
Adviser
A professional staff or faculty member with specific expertise in helping students with academic planning.
Add/Drop
The process used when a student wishes to alter his/her course schedule after having registered. The add deadline is when the course meets for the first time. The deadline to drop is at 60% of the instruction time. See the Credit Class Schedule or Records Office for information.
Audit
Registration for and participation in all functions of a credit course except tests and other graded assignments. No credit is earned for an audited course, and the audit grade does not affect the grade point average. Instructors must give permission for audit status.

B

Billable hour
Credit equivalent hours on which tuition and fee charges for credit courses are based. For insurance purposes, your status full-time/part-time status is based on billable hours. See the Records Office to request insurance verification services.
Bookmark
A feature that allows the storage of web page addresses that are frequently visited.
Browser
An interface to the World Wide Web. Browsers interpret hypertext links to let you view sites and navigate from one Internet node to another. Popular browsers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla, and Netscape.

C

Certificate
Certificate means a credit course sequence designed with discrete goals and objectives for a specific population awarded after successful completion of a minimum of 12 semester hours at the freshman or sophomore levels, or both.
CET

Continuing Education & Training
The division of the College that provides non-credit learning opportunities, licensing, certification and other courses for career development and personal enrichment.
Cookies
Small data files written to your hard drive by some Web sites when you view them in your browser. These data files contain information the site can use to track such things as passwords, lists of pages you’ve visited, and the date when you last looked at a certain page.
Corequisite 
One or more courses which must be taken with a selected course within the same term.
Course ID Number/Synonym
A four digit number assigned to credit courses to uniquely identify each course section offered in a term. The “ID number/ Synonym” can be used during credit registration in lieu of the subject, course number and section number.
Course Number
A three-digit number, for both credit and non-credit courses, following the subject designator, that identifies a specific course within a subject area; e.g., ENGL-101, College Writing 1; BIOL-210, Human Anatomy and Physiology 1;  CIS-223, Introduction to JAVA.
Credit Courses
Courses for which College credits may be earned and may lead to a degree, certificate, or letter of recognition.
Continuing Education & Training Courses
Non-Credit courses offered by the department of Continuing Education & Training.
Credit Hour
The term “hour,” which is the unit of credit awarded by the College, is the equivalent of a subject pursued one fifty-five minute period per week for one 15 week term. In certain courses, two or three periods of laboratory or field work are equivalent to one lecture period.
Credits
Numerical unit(s) earned for completion of a specific course. Credits are related to the number of hours of instruction provided per week during a 15 week academic term.
Cross-listed course
A credit course which is listed under two different subject headings; e.g., HLTH-215, Human Sexuality and PSYC-215, Human Sexuality. Credit is not awarded for both.

D

Dean’s List
The Dean’s List announces those students who have achieved outstanding scholastic success each academic term. To qualify, a student must meet the following conditions
have earned a quality point average of 3.500 or better, and have completed six credits or more during the term.
Degree Program
A planned series of courses aimed at an academic or career goal. Upon completion, an A.A., A.S., A.A.S., or A.A.T. degree may be earned.

E

Elective Courses
Courses that a student may choose in order to complete a part of his/her credit program which count towards graduation requirements.
Employer Voucher, Purchase Order, Letter of Intent:
An employer document that serves as proof that an employer will pay a student’s tuition/fees (full/partial).

F

FACTS (Fast Automatic Cash Transfer System)
FACTS is a tuition management (deferred payment) plan that provides students with a low cost plan for budgeting tuition and other educational expenses.  The plan is available for students who are taking credit classes in the fall and spring terms as well as selected Continuing Education and Training courses. A $200.00 minimum is required for participation. See the Business Office for assistance.
Financial Aid
Financial assistance is provided through scholarships, grants, and employment opportunities for qualifying students. The Financial Aid Program is designed to assist qualified students in meeting their college related expenses.
Financial Aid Award Package
An award which may consist of one or more types of aid; i.e. Federal Financial Aid Programs, Maryland State Scholarship Programs, Institutional Scholarship and Grant Programs, and may be based on the level of a student's financial need, academic merit, and availability of funds.
Financial Responsibility
By registering for courses, a student acknowledges responsibility for payment of tuition and fee charges generated by the registration and accepts the consequences of non-payment. If a credit student (including financial aid applicants) fails to make full payment or enroll in the College’s deferred payment program on or before the specified deadline dates cited in the Credit Class Schedule, the student will be administratively withdrawn from all courses. Continuing Education students must make full payment or enroll in the College’s deferred payment program at the time of registration.

Full-time Student
A student enrolled in 12 or more billable hours in a given term.

General Education Courses
Credit courses intended to ensure that students meet the General Education Learning Goals. In meeting the General Education Learning Goals, students will gain fundamental skills and core knowledge considered basic to all college-level work: Communication; Critical Thinking; Quantitative and Scientific Reasoning; Information and Technology Literacy; Creativity; Global Awareness; and Personal Development and Social Responsibility. Courses are selected from the areas of English composition and literature; biological and physical sciences; arts and humanities; mathematics; social and behavioral sciences; and emerging issues.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
Also referred to as “Quality Point Average” (QPA). The term GPA is determined by multiplying the term credit hours of each course by the number of grade points (quality points) associated with the final grade(s) for the course(s). The cumulative GPA is determined by adding all of the grade points earned and dividing the sum by the cumulative number of credit hours attempted. Grades of “W,” “I,” “AT,” “S,” and “U” are not included in the GPA calculation.
Grade Points
Also referred to as “quality points.” The numerical value of a grade multiplied by the credit hours for a course. (A=4 pts.; B+=3.5; B=3 pts; C+=2.5; C=2 pts.; D+=1.5 pts; D=1 pt.) For example, a student earning an A (4 points/credit) in a three-credit course will earn 12 grade points.
Grade Report
Final grades are made available electronically to students at the end of each term via WebAdvisor. If a paper grade report is needed, contact the Records Office.
Grades
Students receive a grade for a course based on the successful completion of the course criteria, which is set by the instructor and the institution. Final grades for credit courses are entered on the student’s permanent record. Letter grades of “A” through “D” are awarded for passing work, while the letter grade of “F” is awarded for unsatisfactory work. Grades may be given for selected continuing education courses. Grades are CC (certificate based on competencies), CA (certificate based on attendance), and NG (no grade/no certificate).

Incomplete (grade)
 When a student, because of illness or due to unavoidable circumstances, corroborated by the instructor, has not completed the course objectives, he/she may request to do so by contacting the instructor and arranging to complete the outstanding portion of the work. Faculty are required to complete a Notice of Incomplete Grade Form, providing a copy to both the student and the Records Office. The student must complete the outstanding course objective within 30 days of the end of the semester. Faculty must complete an Incomplete Grade Resolution/Grade Change Form and submit it to the Records Office within 30 days of the end of the semester.

Letter of Recognition
Letter of Recognition means a credit course sequence designed with discrete goals and objectives for specific populations awarded after successful completion of 11 semester hours or less at the freshman or sophomore levels, or both.  Request a Letter of Recognition in the Records Office.

Non-Credit Courses:
Courses that do not lead toward a degree; usually available through Continuing Education & Training.

O

Official Transcript or Record:
A printed record of a student’s academic or continuing education history issued by the Records Office that bears the college seal and is enclosed in a sealed envelope.

P

Part-time Student
A student enrolled in 11 or fewer billable hours/credits in a given term.
Password (WebAdvisor)
Your WebAdvisor PASSWORD is the last six (6) digits of your Social Security Number.  Your WebAdvisor and Blackboard passwords may be different.

Placement Tests
A series of tests administered to determine a student’s basic skill level for course eligibility. Students are required to take placement tests in reading, math, and English. A student who has earned a degree from an accredited institution or who has appropriate SAT or ACT exam scores may be exempt from placement testing. Consult with an academic adviser for details.
Prerequisites
Specified conditions; i.e., placement test scores or another course(s), which must be completed prior to enrolling in a particular course.

Reading Literacy
All General Education courses require students to be exempt from or to have successfully completed READ-101. Other non-General Education courses may also have a reading competency prerequisite. Refer to the College catalog or Credit Class Schedule for information on specific course prerequisites.
Refund Policy
For courses that encompass the full term, the refund period will conclude at the end of the day one calendar week after the start of the term (7% of the instruction time for the course). For courses that encompass less than the full term, the refund period is calculated as 7% of the instruction time for the course, per the following chart. Students must complete an Add/Drop form, secure instructor permission, and forward the form to the Records Office prior to close of business on the deadline day. Please see Records Office staff for assistance.

Repeated Courses
No credit course may be taken more than twice without the approval of the Department Chairperson or a designated representative. When a course is repeated, the highest grade and credits awarded will be used in computing the grade point average. All courses taken become part of the student’s permanent record.
Required Courses
Courses that are needed to complete a student’s program of study.

Section Number
A two digit number used to identify each section of a course within a given term.

Senior Adult
A tuition waiver is offered to Maryland residents age 60 or over.
Student ID Number
A seven-digit number randomly assigned to all students.
Subject Designator
A three, four or five letter code used to identify a particular subject, such as “CIS” for computer information systems or “GEOSC” for geoscience. It appears before the course number.
Synonym

T

Third-Party Billing
The process of billing an employer, agency, or other funding source for a student’s tuition. Submission of an employer voucher, purchase order, or letter of intent must be supplied to the Cashier’s Office at the time of registration.
Transfer Credit
Credit completed at another accredited college or university, that has been evaluated and accepted at Carroll Community College.

A process initiated by a credit student who no longer wishes to remain enrolled in all of his/her courses for a given term.
