Course Description

MUSIC-115, Keyboard Skills for Music Majors 2, is designed to give the music major the piano skills necessary for a career in music. Subjects studied are: sight reading, transposition, improvisation, harmonization, scale fingerings, arpeggio fingerings, and choral and instrumental score reading. It is recommended that students planning to transfer to a music program at a four-year college/university concurrently enroll in MUSIC- 111 and MUSIC-113. Prerequisite: MUSIC-114. Three hours laboratory each week. One credit. One billable hour. Offered Spring and Fall terms.

Course Objectives and Grading Information

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 

1. learn to recognize and play all diatonic chords in major and minor keys (GE 3, PG 1, PG 5) 

2. harmonize simple melodies in all major and minor keys (GE 3, GE 5, PG 1, PG 5) 

3. transpose simple melodies in all major and minor keys (GE 3, PG 1, PG 5) 

4. improvise an eight measure melody within major and minor keys (GE 3, GE 5, PG 1, PG 5) 

5. sight-read increasingly complex melodies and songs (GE 3, PG 1, PG 5) 

6. play seventh chords in root position and inversions (GE 3, PG 1, PG 5) 

7. analyze short piano compositions for nonchord tones (GE 3, PG 1, PG 5) 

8. perform all cadences from in four part harmony (GE 3, PG 1, PG 5)
