Course Description

NURS-220, Preparation for Practice Part 1, introduces current theoretical trends in nursing practice and leadership, and facilitates the graduate's entry into nursing practice at the generalist level. Prerequisite: NURS-212 and NURS-217. Twelve and one-half hours of lecture each term. One credit. One billable hour. Offered Winter term only. DIVERSITY/WORLD VIEW.

Course Objectives and Grading Information

MAJOR COURSE OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate a beginning knowledge of the concepts of professional nursing. The student will:

1. Practice nursing within an established theoretical framework, the Neuman Systems Model, for the client system across the lifespan and with any degree of alteration in wellness. (TSLO RN1)

2. Use the nursing process to prioritize nursing care for the client system experiencing stressors from the internal and external environment as a means of decision-making for refining and evaluating practice. (TSLO RN2; GE3)

3. Use critical thinking and applied theories, principles, evidenced-based nursing, and concepts in making decisions to assist the client system to attain, maintain, and retain stability. (TSLO RN3; GE2)

4. Implement comprehensive therapeutic communication skills, both written and verbal, when interacting with the client system and members of the health care team during primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. (TSLO RN5; GE1)

5. Analyze the impact of one?s own behaviors, attitudes and values in helping the client system deal with physiological, psychological, sociocultural, developmental, and spiritual variables. (TSLO RN8; GE6; GE7)

6. Analyze contemporary workforce issues and health care delivery concerns of nursing practice at the generalist level. (TSLO RN9; GE2; GE5; GE7)

7. Demonstrate commitment to continued learning by self-directed learning, professional growth, and professional organization membership. (TSLO RN10;GE7)

8. Apply appropriate delegation and management strategies essential for entry into practice at the generalist level. (TSLO RN11)
