HES-105, Introduction to Exercise Science
HES-105, Introduction to Exercise Science, is designed to help the student gain knowledge, skills and abilities in the areas of exercise science and basic exercise physiology. It helps the student define professional goals and develop core competencies deemed essential for a career in the exercise science field. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have a sound understanding of basic exercise science practices, principles, sub-disciplines, and current career options. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of MAT-091, ENGL-101 or ENGL-103, and PHED-101 or permission of instructor. Three hours lecture each week. Three credits. Three billable hours. Offered Fall and Spring terms.
Course Objectives and Grading Information
MAJOR COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe the history and current field of Exercise Science as it relates to the subdisciplines, theories, and terminology (PG1,5, GE1, Exam 1).
2. Apply and analyze sports nutrition and sports medicine practices (PG1,5,GE 2, Exam 2).
3. Survey the sub-disciplines of biomechanics, sports psychology, and kinesiology to better understand their historical development and current professional work performed in each area (PG1,5, GE2, Exam 3).
4. Develop research techniques and familiarize the student with professional organizations and journals through reading and discussion (PG3, GE2,4, Research Abstracts)
5. Present research findings in a small group discussion format using media (PG3, 4, GE1,2,4, Oral Report/Powerpoint Presentation)
6. Observe and critique two areas of exercise science by fieldwork experience and contact with professionals in those areas. (PG4,5,GE1,2,7, Observation Reports)
7. Analyze and assess at least one exercise science sub-discipline through research and salary data collection in a field of interest. (PG3,5, GE1,3,6,7, Career Project)
