Course Description

MATH-130, Precalculus, is an intensive one semester course covering the same material in MATH-128 and MATH-129 and is intended for future mathematics/science majors. Topics include the real number system; algebraic expressions; equations and inequalities in one variable; systems of linear equations and inequalities; relations and functions; analysis of polynomial, power, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric, inverse trigonometric, parametric, and polar functions and their graphs; right triangle trigonometry, trigonometric identities, Laws of Sines and Cosines, conics, parametric equations, polar coordinates, and polar equations. Problems will be solved through analytic, numerical, and graphical approaches with an emphasis on setting up and solving relevant application problems. Students who need to take MATH-135, Calculus of a Single Variable 1, will need to complete MATH-130, Precalculus, or both MATH-128 and MATH-129 in a year long sequence. Prerequisites: exemption/completion of READ-099, and a satisfactory score on the placement exam, or MAT-099 with a "B" grade or better or permission of the Mathematics Faculty Chair. Credit by exam available. Graphing calculator required. See Mathematics Department web site for details. Five hours lecture each week. Five credits. Five billable hours. Credit cannot be earned in both MATH-128/129 and MATH-130. GENERAL EDUCATION

Course Objectives and Grading Information

MAJOR COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to: 

1. Evaluate, analyze graphs and find the domain and range of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. (GE3, PG1) 

2. Identify and graph shifts, reflections and transformations of functions. (GE3, PG1) 

3. Find inverses of functions analytically and graphically. (GE3, PG1) 

4. Determine the zeros of polynomial functions using analytic and graphical techniques. (GE3, PG1) 

5. Perform operations with complex numbers. (GE3, PG1) 

6. Use properties of logarithms to evaluate and rewrite logarithmic expressions. (GE3, PG1) 

7. Solve linear, quadratic, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric equations. (GE3, PG1) 

8. Find a composition of functions. (GE3, PG1) 

9. Use function models to set up and solve application problems including problems involving triangles. (GE2, GE3, PG1, PG3, PG4) 

10. Apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines to solve oblique triangles. (GE3, PG1) 

11. Graph polar and parametric equations and convert to rectangular form. (GE3, PG1) 

12. Represent vectors as directed line segments and perform mathematical operations with vectors. (GE3, PG1)
