APRIL 2011
Friday, April 15 - Departure from Washington D.C. for the flights to Madrid.
Saturday, April 16 - Arrive in Barcelona. Following customs formalities, we'll transfer to the hotel to check in for a three-night stay. Enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel this evening.
Sunday, April 17 - After a good night's sleep and breakfast, a local guide will take us on an orientation tour of the city. We'll see the distinctive architecture of Antonio Gaudi by visiting Parque Güell (Güell Park) and his monumental, yet unfinished, La Sagrada Familia (Church of the Holy Family). In the afternoon, a walking tour of the Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter) includes a visit to the Picasso Museum, housed in the beautiful Aguilar Palace. Although Picasso wasn't born in Barcelona, he spent his formative years here. The museum features his early works, drawings, and etchings, as well as changing exhibits devoted to his diverse career and artistic styles.
Monday, April 18 - We'll have a full day to explore Barcelona.
Tuesday, April 19 - Depart Barcelona and travel by motorcoach to the historic Monastery of Montserrat, reaching the monastery via cable car. The ornate basilica, located in a spectacular mountainous setting, is often referred to as the spiritual capital of Catalonia. Continue to Madrid, the Spanish capital. Check in at the hotel for a four-night stay and have dinner.
Wednesday, April 20 - Today we'll visit Nacional Centro de Art Reina Sofia, the modern art museum that houses Picasso's painting Guernica. In the afternoon, walk through the Old Town and visit the Palacio Real (Royal Palace). Here we'll see impressive collections of French tapestries, porcelain, furniture, and armor. The massive palace was begun in 1737 and has nearly 2,800 rooms! It is still used on special occasions, but Spain's king and queen live in a more modest, suburban palace that is not open to the public.
Thursday, April 21 - The captivating city of Toledo awaits us today, one of Spain's most monumental historical cities. It is an important intellectual center where Christians, Jews, and Muslims have lived and worked together, and we'll see fine examples of architecture from each of these traditions. Toledo is also known for its associations with the famous 16th-century artist, El Greco. During our walking tour, we'll visit the Gothic Cathedral, where many of El Greco's works can be found, and the Synagogue. After free time to explore Toledo on our own, we'll return to Madrid and visit the incomparable Prado. This art gallery boasts works by Goya, Rubens, Velázquez, and Titian.
Friday, April 22 - We'll have a full day to explore Madrid.
Saturday, April 23 - Transfer to the Madrid Airport to check in for the flights home.
