1. What is a First Advising Session (FAS)?

Your First Advising Session offers an overview of college resources either in a small group setting or, if you prefer, an online option is now available (VFAS). In the session, led by an academic advisor, your test results are explained to you in the context of your individualized academic plan. College registration, attendance, refund procedures and other academic requirements and information are also explained.

2. What is a Virtual First Advising Session (VFAS)?

A Virtual First Advising Session is a self-paced, online tutorial that replicates the goals and content of the group FAS session described above, but you complete it independently. If you  choose the VFAS, your placement test scores will be e-mailed to you as soon as they are available, usually within five days of testing. Upon completing the VFAS, you are required to pass an online quiz and bring a completed registration form to the Advising Office, Room A102, for final approval. You may choose this option for flexibility and to expedite the registration process.

3. Why do I need to complete a FAS or VFAS?

The FAS provides you with a better understanding about academic planning and a solid foundation for your first semester of college. If you have a transcript documenting the successful completion of at least twelve academic credits (four courses), you are not required to complete the FAS.

4. What will I learn in the FAS?

Information is shared about:

  • Important academic dates to remember
  • Academic planning - your degree program requirements
  • Transfer planning - strategies for selecting courses for transfer

5. What is the duration of the FAS and VFAS?

Please allow about one-and-one-half hours for either session including the time it will take to complete your registration form. If you are on campus for a FAS, you can register immediately after the session or return to campus at a later date to meet with an advisor and complete the process.

6. Will I receive my placement test results?

Yes, you will receive placement test results and an explanation of scores.

7. Will I register for my classes at the FAS?

You have the option at the end of the session to prepare a schedule for your first semester's coursework, which you provide to the Registration Office for processing.

8. How do I register for classes if I have completed a VFAS?

VFAS students must come to campus to have their registration choices approved by an advisor and the actual registration processed by our Records Office. Computers are available on campus for students who want to use the VFAS and register immediately after.

9. What is a "Concurrent" or "Released-Time" student?

Concurrent or Released-Time Students take high school and college courses in the same term. Eligible students need permission from their high school.

Concurrent Students need to bring a signed high school concurrent enrollment application from your high school guidance office to their FAS session or at the time of registration. All Concurrent students are also eligible for either the FAS or the VFAS options. Visit the Admissions Office in room A-101 when you are ready to register.

10. What should I do if I cannot attend the FAS I scheduled?

To reschedule, please contact the Testing Center , Room A120, at 410-386-8450. Again, the VFAS can be completed at your convenience so rescheduling will never be a concern. We recommend students complete either process as soon as possible as classes begin to fill up as the registration period continues.

Contact the Admissions Office in room A-101 or at 410.386.8430 for assistance anytime during the application, admissions or testing process. The Admissions Office is located just inside the main entrance of the college, the first door on your right.
