EMS-101, Systems and Rescue

Course Description

EMS-101, Systems and Rescue, will present and discuss the introductory content required to be a professional rescuer in various emergency medical services systems. Students will be expected to identify and discuss the components that make up an EMS System: advanced life support, role, responsibilities, medical legal challenges, well being, illness and injury prevention, and ethics. The program will require students to participate as a member of a team in guided rescue experiences utilizing personal protective ensemble. This course is a hybrid, delivering content and activities online. Classroom/lab hours will be scheduled on weekends. Prerequisite: This course is open to any student who has met the requirements for acceptance into the program and has access to turnout gear. Thirty-six hours lecture, twelve hours rescue lab, twenty-two hours asynchronous lecture. Three credits. Three billable hours. Additional $75 fee required.

Course Objectives and Grading Information

OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will describe the role of a Paramedic, outline how that role has developed historically, and differentiate between professionalism, professional licensure, certification, and registration. (Program: 1,2; Gen Ed 1, 4,7)

2. Students will identify key elements necessary for effective emergency medical services systems operations, and the benefits of each component of off-line/indirect and on-line/direct medical direction. (Program 1,2; Gen Ed 1,2)

3. Students will describe the benefits of continuing education, outline the role and components of an effective continuous quality improvement program, and identify key components of pre-hospital research, its benefits to EMS systems, and how to address ethical considerations related to research. (Program 1,2,3; Gen Ed 1,2,3,4,7)

4. Students will describe the components of wellness, a paramedic’s role in promoting wellness, and the benefits of lifestyle choices that promote wellness within the profession, and aspects of the EMS system that make it a desirable resource for involvement in community wellness activities. (Program 1,2; Gen Ed 1,2,7)

5. Students will identify preventative measures that minimize the risk of work-related injuries associated with functioning as a paramedic including normal and abnormal anxiety and stress reactions, stress-reduction techniques and critical incident stress management. (Program 1,2,3; Gen Ed 1,2,7)

6. Students will describe the basic structure of the legal system in the United States, and how laws affect the paramedic’s practice, and detail the components of the narrative report necessary for effective legal documentation. (Program 1,2,3; Gen Ed 1,4,7)

7. Students will describe legal considerations related to patient transportation, and ethical and legal issues related to specific resuscitation situations, patient confidentiality, consent, suspected abuse, and measures the paramedic should take to preserve evidence at a crime or accident scene, as well as protect himself from a claim of negligence. (Program 1,2; Gen Ed 1,2,7)

8. Students will describe factors considered to ensure appropriate timing of medical and mechanical skills during rescue, outline each phase of a rescue operation, describe considerations in EMS response to surface water rescue, hazardous atmospheres, operations on the highway, and response over hazardous terrain. (Program 3,4,5; Gen Ed 2,3)
