Course Description

OFFC-230, Legal Typing and Transcription, is a self-directed online course that enables the student to master specialized legal vocabulary and document preparation using transcription equipment. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-091 and OFFC-220. Self-paced. 3 credits. 3 billable hours.

Course Objectives and Grading Information

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

1. The student will become familiar with the field of Legal Transcription, including the overall job environment, job expectations, performance standards, the purpose and information contained on the legal correspondence and forms and the procedures to be followed in executing, filing, recording, or serving the documents. (General Education Goal #4, Program Goal #1, #2) 

2. Study the following specialties used as a context in meeting the above course objectives: a. Litigation: Initiating and Answering a Lawsuit, Discovery/Judgment, Correspondence Preparation b. Probate Practice: Wills, Probate Procedure, Guardianships, Conservator ships, Name Changes c. Family Law: Termination of Marriage, Adoptions, and Paternity d. Legal Instruments: Contracts, Corporations, Real Estate e. Bankruptcy 

3. Demonstrate the ability to apply correct punctuation and grammar, identify correct spelling of words, and apply proofreading skills in recognizing and correcting errors. (Program Goal #3)
