Course Description

EDUC-107, PRAXIS I Preparation for Reading and Writing, prepares Teacher Education students and provisional teachers for successful completion of the reading/writing portion of the PRAXIS I series. Concepts and skills measured by the test are reviewed. Test format and question types are analyzed. Test-taking strategies are developed. PRAXIS I is required for entry into most Maryland four-year Teacher Education programs and for the Maryland State Department of Education to review student transcripts. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-099 and ENGL-101 or ENGL-103. One hour lecture each week. No credit. One billable hour. Audit only.

Course Objectives - Reading: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:    

1. Identify the main idea of a reading passage (GE 1, 2) 

2. Identify supporting ideas and specific details in a reading passage (GE 1, 2) 

3. Summarize information in a reading passage (GE 1, 2) 

4. Recognize key phrases and transition words in a reading passage (GE 1, 2) 

5. Determine whether material presented is fact or opinion (GE 1, 2) 

6. Make inferences from directly stated information in a reading passage (GE 1, 2) 

7. Make generalizations and draw conclusions about material presented in a reading selection (GE 1, 2) 

8. Compare and contrast information from two reading selections (GE 1, 2) 

9. Organize information into graphs and charts (GE 1, 2) 

10.Determine whether facts or ideas are consistent with, or relevant to, an argument (GE 1, 2) 

11.Interpret vocabulary and ideas from context of reading selection. (GE 1, 2)
