EDUC-106, PRAXIS I Preparation for Mathematics

Credits: 0

Course Description

EDUC-106, PRAXIS I Preparation for Mathematics, prepares Teacher Education candidates and provisional teachers for successful completion of the mathematics portion of the PRAXIS I series. Students are introduced to the format and content of the PPST Mathematics Test. Concepts and skills in each of the five broad areas assessed in the test are reviewed. Students are helped to refine their computational and mathematical reasoning skills. PRAXIS I is required for entry into most Maryland four-year Teacher Education programs and for the Maryland State Department of Education to review student transcripts. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-099 and ENGL-101 or ENGL-103, and MAT-097. One hour lecture each week. No credit. One billable hour. Audit only.

Course Objectives and Grading Information

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the foundational ideas of numbers, number properties, and operations defined on numbers. (GE 1, 2, 3, 7; PG 3)

2. Demonstrate an understanding of the procedures required to represent quantitative relationships and the ability to plan, execute, interpret and complete operations to solve problems. (GE 1, 2, 3, 7; PG 3)

3. Demonstrate an ability to interpret visual displays of quantitative information, to determine whether statements based on data are true or false, to make inferences from data, and to represent a given set of data graphically. (GE 1, 2, 3, 7; PG 3)

4. Demonstrate an understanding of measurement of the U.S. customary and metric systems of measurement, and of geometric properties and relationships. (GE 1, 2, 3, 7; PG 3)

5. Demonstrate an ability to use basic logic in a quantitative setting. (GE 1, 2, 3, 7; PG 3)
