Course Description

BUAD-101, Introduction to Business, provides an overview of the concepts underlying business. Major topics of discussion include forms of business ownership, management theory, human resource management, marketing, accounting, and finance. Prerequisite: exemption/completion of READ-091. Three credits. Three billable hours. DIVERSITY/WORLD VIEW.

Course Objectives and Grading Information

COURSE OBJECTIVES:  Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

1. Explain basic economic concepts such as types of economic systems, supply, demand, profit, economic stability and growth, and types of competitive environments. (BUAD PG 1) 

2. Describe basic forms of business ownership and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each. (BUAD PG 1) 

3. Define social responsibility and ethics and discuss strategies for encouraging ethical behavior. (GE GOAL 7, BUAD PG 1) 

4. Understand the role of international trade in the economy and describe protectionist measures. (GE GOAL 6, BUAD PG 1) 

5. Relate basic concepts of management: managerial skills, effectiveness and efficiency, the four management functions, and the management hierarchy. (BUAD PG 1) 

6. Describe the process of human resource management and identify legal and ethical issues. (BUAD PG 1) 

7. Describe basic theories of motivation. (BUAD PG 1) 

8. Identify the four strategies in the marketing mix and major decisions in each. (BUAD PG 1) 

9. Explain the purpose of accounting and interpret basic financial statements. (BUAD PG 1) 

10. Describe how companies use stocks and bonds as a source of long-term financing. (BUAD PG 1) 

11. Understand the role of the financial manager in financial planning, financial control, and risk management. (BUAD PG 1) 

12. Communicate effectively in writing. (GE GOAL 1, BUAD PG 2) 

13. Demonstrate the ability to use word processing and spreadsheet software to communicate information and analyze data. (GE GOAL 4, BUAD PG 4)
