Color studies the physical characteristics and the psychological effects of color. Theory is translated into studio projects. Emphasis is on the impact and manipulation of color in both fine art and graphic design. Adherence to project specs and attention to craftsmanship is stressed. Prerequisite: ART-105, or can be taken concurrently with ART-105, and exemption/completion of READ-091. Although there is no textbook for this course, the cost of art supplies will equal or exceed the cost of an average text. Materials list will be distributed at the first class session. Two hours lecture, two hours laboratory each week. Three credits. Three billable hours.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of ART 115 (grade of C or better), the student will demonstrate by presentation of his/her portfolio, the ability to accomplish the following:
1. Identify and define the properties of color: hue, value, intensity, and the principle of simultaneous contrast in both projects and in critique according to Joseph Albers Color Theory.
2. Demonstrate understanding of both additive and subtractive theory in written assignments.
3. Execute, with good craftsmanship, 22 exercises which solve color problems.
4. Achieve effects of simultaneous contrast relative to hue, value, intensity, and induced complementaries in studies made of Coloraid paper.
5. Demonstrate understanding of induced color by presenting a final project which implements masterwork and imitates it in every aspect of color theory.
6. Apply all color effects in original, well-balanced designs.
7. Maintain a satisfactory portfolio in accordance with the "Requirements for Proper Presentation" handout.
8. Complete the final Masterwork.
