In this play, three teenage misfits in Salem, OR discover they are linked by a scandal that’s rocked their town. When one of them sets out to expose the truth, secrets become currency, the stakes get higher, and the trio’s connection grows deeper in this searching, fiercely funny, and dark musical comedy.
Speech & Debate peeks into the world of today’s adolescence, begging the questions: what are they hearing, where are they going, and who is listening to them?
“Speech & Debate captures with humor and stark understanding what it’s like to be a young person in America. In many ways, high school students are finding their ways like they have over the last 100 years, but in a technological age of information overload, it might be even easier to feel isolated and lost. The play is touching at times, hilarious at times, and most definitely worth seeing.”
Entertainment Weekly calls Speech & Debate “one of the top ten plays of the year.” The New York Times calls this production “savvy comedy… bristling with vitality, wicked humor, and terrific dialogue.”
Speech & Debate is not intended for children, but for mature audiences.
