Carroll Community College Student Newspaper Debuts This Fall

Westminster, Md., Students at Carroll Community College (Carroll) with a flair for writing and an interest in gathering news are producing a new, completely online student newspaper called The-Quill. The first issue was launched Aug. 29.

This is the second time students have published a newspaper at Carroll Community College. Many years ago, the first newspaper was called The Carroll Chronicle and was printed and distributed in hard copy on campus.

The-Quill Editor Luke Fisher said, “I think that Carroll needed to provide the students with a newspaper that offered a fair and unbiased news publication. We want to focus on issues that affect the students of Carroll.”

Some of the stories included in the first issue are an interview with Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis and an investigative look at textbook prices. These two articles represent the variety of informative, intriguing, and in-depth material that The-Quill staff intends to publish each week.

The deadlines for the newspaper are bi-weekly, but articles will appear as they are written so that content stays fresh, Fisher said. The-Quill will be promoted via Facebook, Twitter, and RSS Feeds.

“I took on the project to develop the newspaper, so it was sort of assumed by the other members that I would be editor. It's a big responsibility, but one I believe I'm prepared for,” Fisher said.

“There was a cost issue in having a physical paper edition of The-Quill,” Fisher said. “We also felt that we could reach a larger audience of people through the Internet. Most importantly, we wanted to be ‘green.’ Printing a paper edition would not have been environmentally-friendly.”
