Benjamin Spurrier Chosen as 2011 President’s Academic Excellence Award

Award will be Given at Commencement

Westminster, Md., April 11, 2011--Carroll Community College (Carroll) President Dr. Faye Pappalardo has selected a 2011 graduate as the recipient of the President’s Academic Excellence Award. Benjamin Spurrier will receive a scholarship award from the college president on May 25, 2011 during Commencement ceremonies at McDaniel College.

“I am delighted that Benjamin has received the President’s Academic Excellence Award,” said Dr. Pappalardo. “According to our faculty, Benjamin is exemplary in his work at Carroll and is clearly deserving of this honor. I congratulate him for his hard work.”

Students selected for the award have completed at least 45 Carroll credits, have a 4.0 average, and were recommended by the faculty to the president.

Spurrier started taking classes at Carroll before graduating from high school in 2008. When he became a Carroll student, he chose the Business Administration major after taking a variety of classes to help him make the decision. He also became involved in many activities, including serving as vice president of scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa honor society; student ambassador; Campus Activities Board Member; and Alpha Beta Gamma business honor society member. He also volunteers to give bi-weekly presentations on financial planning for those on public assistance.

He has maintained a 4.0 G.P.A, and said, “I set high standards for myself and followed through with my goal to have a high G.P.A.”

“Carroll Community College has instructors who are always willing to help and who really care about the interests of students,” he said. “I recommend starting here before pursuing an education at a four-year university.”

Spurrier has been accepted to College Park and will transfer there to pursue a degree in business. He hopes to obtain an M.B.A. one day.

Spurrier is a resident of Manchester, Md.
