Carroll Community College Offers MSDE-Approved Reading Courses

Westminster, Md., In spring, 2011, Carroll Community College will offer a reading course for teachers seeking early childhood/elementary certification and renewal. The course is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Instruction of Reading, EDUC-204-65, is designed to give the classroom teacher familiarity with a representative array of research-based instructional techniques and strategies in the area of reading. The three-credit course begins April 5 and ends May 17, 2011. As a prerequisite, the student must have a bachelor's degree.

Faculty will offer classroom instruction, project-based assignments, individual conferencing, and online instruction in a fast-tracked, seven-week format.

The reading course is approved by MSDE to meet the existing reading course work requirements for teachers. They may be eligible for reimbursement by Carroll County Public Schools if the courses are required for initial certification or certification renewal.

In addition, Carroll offers courses for conditional teachers completing their MSDE certification. They include Teaching Reading in the Content Areas I and II; Educational Psychology; Special Education; Effective Teaching Methodology; Secondary Education; Human Development; and Assessment in Education.
