Colleges Work Collaboratively on Westminster Clean-Up Project 2011

Westminster, Md., On Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., over 150 volunteers are expected to join together for the second annual Westminster Clean-Up Project, a joint effort between Carroll Community College (Carroll) and McDaniel College (McDaniel).

This effort is organized by the Maryland Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA coordinators at each college. Jeana Biondo is the VISTA at Carroll, and Naomi Raphael is the VISTA at McDaniel. VISTA is an acronym for Volunteer In Service To America, and VISTAs dedicate a year of their life to fight poverty according to Biondo, who is in her second year of service.

Biondo and Raphael are seeking volunteers to paint, mulch, weed, garden, and perform other general maintenance tasks throughout various areas of Westminster. The city will provide the supplies and assignments for the volunteers. Volunteers will be identified as part of the project through team t-shirts that they'll receive in the morning.

The event will be held rain or shine. Light refreshments will be provided at the start of the Westminster Clean-Up Project 2011, and volunteers will handle their assignments for three hours. The morning concludes with an appreciation lunch held on the McDaniel campus.

Pre-registration no later than March 25 is required if volunteers wish to receive a t-shirt. To pre-register or ask questions about the starting location for the event, please e-mail or
