Carroll Community College Presents the Musical RENT

Westminster, Md., Carroll Community College (Carroll) will present the musical RENT in the Theater in the Scott Center this spring. Performances will be held March 9, 10, 11, 12 at 7:30 p.m. and March 12 and 13 at 2:00 p.m.

According to the Music Theatre International website, "Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer-prize- winning Broadway musical is based loosely on Puccini's opera La Bohème. It follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York's East Village."

"RENT will be our largest cast ever with 30 actors," said Bill Gillett, director for RENT and Carroll's Program Coordinator for Theatre. "Eighty-five people auditioned.   My initial plan was to cast 25, but I found so many talented actors, I had difficulty limiting the size.  I decided I would find room for more," said Gillett, whose cast is comprised of students and community actors of all ages and backgrounds.

"It's the same show as the Broadway show, with the same size rock band," said Gillett, "but we approach each play from the perspective that this show has never been produced before.  This way our show will be fresh, new, and in many ways, re-imagined."

Tickets go on sale February 1, 2011. The cost is $15 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors, and Carroll faculty and staff.

Advance ticket sales are only available online at  If not sold out in advance, tickets will also be available at the door.

This production is recommended for mature audiences and not intended for small children.
