Summer Kids @ Carroll Inspires Youth to Become Tech-Savvy
Where can youth from pre-school through middle school learn how to make a movie using a computer, learn how to create a web page, or understand GPS technology, all in one summer? Carroll Community College offers all of this and more during Summer Kids @ Carroll from June 18 through August 17, 2007. The college will host over 100 summer enrichment programs, including 42 totally new adventures, at its 1601 Washington Rd. campus.
"Technology is our future," said Mary Anne Marsalek, coordinator of Lifelong Learning at the college. "We want to help children use it creatively to understand their world."
Computer Explorer's Claymation

Dinosaurs, fossils and bones…oh yeah! This new course will teach you about dinosaurs and fossils. Then use technology to go on your own fossil dig, analyze and assemble skeleton pieces, produce a fossil reconstruction, create a mural… and take home a movie documentary of your discoveries!

This new course offers a new perspective on the world in this outdoor action-based class! Your team will learn the fundamentals of Global Positioning Systems technology as they use a hand-held GPS to search for treasure and leave replacement "valuables" for another adventurous group to find, and then play geogolf and go geodashing!

Computer Explorer's Microscopic CSI
You're the detective after an elusive criminal! With this new course you will examine clues and specimens and use the Scientific Method and the QX3+TM Microscope to solve the mystery. Finally, compose a sketch of your criminal using the special effects of the microscope software.

Computer Explorer's Movie Making
Is the future Steven Spielberg enrolled? We'll find out after the students create and develop an adventure movie and build a movie studio! Students will then film their movie using a PC Movie Camera. After adding/editing movie dialogue, sound effects, music and graphics, they'll create titles, credits and text. Go home with the movie on a CD of your own.

With this new course you can design, create and edit your own arcade-style video game: design the action, create the characters, and edit the objectives and outcomes. Lego Robotics 2
Join us as we explore intermediate level topics in building and programming robots using the LEGO® Mindstorms Robotics Invention System. Students with previous LEGO Mindstorms experience learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. In small teams, using LEGO parts, motors and sensors, students build at least two different robot models and use a computer to program their robots to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve challenges. Take the field trip of your life to the Red Planet by attending this new class! Your team will integrate math, science, and technology into exciting inquiry-based activities. Build an obstacle field out of LEGO bricks on a 4' x 8' vinyl mat that mimics the surface of Mars.
